After about a six-month hiatus to play some other games, I went back to APBA baseball and the 1989 season. The San Francisco Giants season replay was fun, so I went and did the same with their Bay Area counterparts, the World Series champion Oakland Athletics.
We went to a number of A’s games growing up, but it appears we didn’t make it to Oakland in 1989. But we did see the A’s once that year — game four of the earthquake-delayed World Series, when Oakland clinched the series sweep.
While the replay Giants finished 13 games better than what they did in real life, the A’s were not nearly as fortunate. After rallying from a terrible start, the A’s ended up with a 97-65 record, two wins shy of their actual 99-win total. Instead of winning the American League West by seven games, it ended up being quite a pennant race that was decided on the final day of the season.
Here is the final season recap and statistical analysis.
This was done with the basic APBA cards-and-dice game with as-played starting lineups. This project ran from January to April 2024.
