Atlanta Braves 2, Pittsburgh Pirates 1

GAME #6 (winners’ bracket first round):

Phil Niekro threw eight strong innings to lead the Braves to victory. Atlanta’s Claudell Washington got things started with a home run in the first inning, but Pittsburgh’s Tim Foli tied it with an RBI single in the top of the third. What turned out to be the winning run came after two Pittsburgh errors, and a sacrifice fly by Brett Butler in the fifth inning. All five Pirate hits came in the first four innings. Niekro and closer Rick Camp retired the final 13 Pittsburgh batters. Despite giving up only one earned run and five hits in his eight innings, Rick Rhoden took the loss.
