GAME #3 (winners’ bracket first round):
A marathon contest finally ended in the bottom of the 12th inning when Carl Yastrzemski doubled with one out, and Carney Lansford followed with an RBI single to right. The game was 0-0 after nine innings. Minnesota finally broke through in the top of the 10th when John Castino reached on an error, and scored on a double by Hosken Powell. The Red Sox stayed alive with a run in the bottom of the 10th as Yastrzemski walked, Lansford singled, and Dave Stapleton hit a sacrifice fly. The starting pitchers were terrific, each going 10 innings, in the Red Sox’s Mike Torrez (one unearned run and four hits) against the Twins’ Pete Redfern (one run on six hits). In relief, Boston’s Bill Campbell (two perfect innings) took the win, while Minnesota’s Doug Corbett was saddled with the loss.
