Tony Armas led off the seventh inning with a solo home run and Steve McCatty threw a three-hit shutout as the top-seeded Athletics advanced. McCatty also walked three and struck out five. He stranded Royals runners on third base on two occasions, and on second base another two times. He gave up only one hit in the final five innings. Rickey Henderson had a pair of hits for the A’s. Larry Gura was the hard-luck loser, giving up six hits and one run with four strikeouts in a complete game.
