GAME #16 (winners’ bracket second round):
A three-run fourth inning that included a pair of RBI triples by Joe Lefebvre and Gene Richards helped the Padres out to a 4-0 lead. San Diego’s Chris Welsh (6.3 innings, six hits, four strikeouts) kept the Dodgers in check until the seventh inning, when Ron Cey hit a two-run homer. Lefebvre restored the four-run lead with a two-run homer in the top of the ninth. The Dodgers’ Dusty Baker homered to lead off the ninth to account for the final run of the game. Fernando Valenzuela (8 innings, four runs, two earned runs, five hits, eight strikeouts) took the loss.
