A six-run fifth inning helped Boston to a 7-2 lead, and then the Red Sox held on as the Yankees scored four runs in the final two innings. The Yankees had 13 hits, including a 3-for-3 effort by Dave Revering, but left 11 runners on base. Six of the nine Red Sox hits came in the fifth inning, including a three-run home run by Dwight Evans and a two-run single by Tony Perez. Down four heading into the ninth, Dave Winfield had an RBI single and Reggie Jackson followed with a two-run home run. That made it a one-run game with no one out, but Boston’s Bill Campbell came in and stopped the bleeding for the save. Dennis Eckersley gave up two runs in seven innings to pick up the win, while the Yankees’ Rick Reuschel surrendered all seven runs in 4 1/3 innings.
