The Royals’ Mike Jones tossed a three-hit shutout, walking one and striking out two. The Pirates put runners on third base twice and second base in two other innings, but he shut Pittsburgh down from there. Kansas City scored three runs with two outs in the second inning to take the lead, as John Wathan had an RBI single and Darryl Motley stroked a two-run homer. Motley added an RBI single in the fourth to make it 5-0. Omar Moreno had two of the three Pirate hits.
