The Mets’ 5-9 hitters provided eight of the team’s 12 hits and all five of the runs scored in the win. Hubie Brooks went 3-for-3, while Doug Flynn had a pair of doubles. Chicago scored first in the third inning on an RBI single by Ron LeFlore, but left runners in scoring position in the fifth, sixth and eighth innings. Pat Zachry tossed a solid seven innings for the Mets, striking out seven while allowing six hits, two walks and a run. The Mets took the lead in the fifth on a Flynn sacrifice fly and a Mookie Wilson RBI single. They padded their lead with an RBI single by Frank Tavares in the seventh, and RBI doubles by Rusty Staub and Flynn in the eighth.
