Boston Red Sox 6, Oakland Athletics 4

GAME #27 (winners’ bracket quarterfinals):

Top-seeded Oakland had six hits in the first four innings but could only muster one run. Boston, meanwhile, had a four-run second inning (all unearned) that featured RBI singles by Rich Gedman and Jerry Remy and a two-run double by Jim Rice. The Athletics briefly tied things up after scoring three times in the top of the sixth, as Rickey Henderson and Dwayne Murphy had run-scoring singles, followed by an RBI double by Cliff Johnson. But in the bottom of the sixth, Boston’s Rick Miller launched a two-run homer to take back the lead, and that was all the Red Sox would need. Boston pitchers Frank Tanana, Tom Burgmeier and Bill Campbell retired the final 10 A’s hitters in a row.
