GAME #34 (losers’ bracket):
A two-run double in the sixth inning by Kirk Gibson proved to be the difference and Dan Petry had a strong pitching performance for the Tigers. The Mets opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as the result of an error. The Tigers quickly evened it up in the second inning on an RBI double by Tom Brookens. Al Cowens and Alan Trammell led off the sixth with singles, and one out later, Gibson plated both of them with a double. The Mets closed to within one run on a sacrifice fly by Mookie Wilson in the seventh. But Petry (eight innings, seven strikeouts, six hits, two walks, one earned run) stranded runners on third base in the seventh inning and second base in the eighth. Kevin Saucier came in and gave up a leadoff double to the Mets in the ninth, but got the next three outs for the save.
