GAME #33 (losers’ bracket):
The Royals plated four runs in the top of the first, which included RBI doubles by George Brett and Hal McRae, and led by multiple runs the entire way. It was 6-3 after four innings when Amos Otis collected his second RBI single of the game. Brett had an RBI single in the sixth to push the lead to 7-3. After a rough stretch in the third and fourth, Dennis Leonard (8 2/3 innings, nine hits, three walks, four earned runs) got through the next four innings without issue. With two outs in the ninth, the Cubs’ Bill Buckner and Leon Durham hit back-to-back homers. Dan Quisenberry was summoned to get the one-out save. Willie Wilson and John Wathan both had three hits for Kansas City, as did Durham for Chicago.
