GAME #32 (losers’ bracket):
After 14 1/2 innings of scoreless play, Steve Garvey finally ended the marathon contest with a two-out RBI single to left-center. Davey Lopes had led off the inning with a single and was sacrificed to second before scoring a batter later. Burt Hooton (10 innings, seven strikeouts, four hits) and Bob Welch (five innings, two strikeouts, four hits, two walks) combined on the shutout. The Cardinals left runners in scoring position in nine different innings, including five of the six extra-inning frames. The Dodgers only had one runner reach third base before the 15th inning.
