GAME #30 (winners’ bracket quarterfinals):
The Giants took an 8-2 lead after batting in the top of the fifth, then held on in a wild game. A six-run fifth was highlighted by an RBI triple by Darrell Evans, a two-run single by Milt May and a two-run homer by Joe Morgan. The Padres came back with one in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Juan Bonilla, three runs in the sixth on an two-run single by Randy Bass and an RBI double by Ozzie Smith, and another run in the seventh on Gene Richards’ triple, followed by a wild pitch. The tying run was stranded at third in the seventh, and the Padres brought the winning run to the plate in the ninth before Giant closer Greg Minton got the final out. May had three hits for the Giants, while Smith had three hits with two doubles for the Padres.
