GAME #39 (winners’ bracket semifinals):
Carl Yastrzemski and Dave Stapleton homered and despite being outhit 14-10, the Red Sox advanced. Yastrzemski’s two-run blast made it 2-0 after the first inning and Stapleton’s three-run shot made it 5-2 after five innings. Baltimore scored two in the seventh to close within one run, but Boston countered with four runs in the bottom half of the frame, with sacrifice flies by Stapleton and Rick Miller and a two-run double by Rich Gedman. Trailing 9-4, Baltimore got two runs back in the eighth on a solo homer by John Lowenstein and an RBI single by Rick Dempsey, but there would be no comeback. Baltimore’s Lowenstein had three hits to lead all players. The Orioles had at least one hit in seven of their nine at-bats.
