GAME #40 (winners’ bracket semifinals):
Jerry Martin hit a two-run homer for the Giants in the top of the 13th, finally breaking up what had been an incredible pitchers’ duel to that point. Nolan Ryan retired the first 18 Giant hitters, but Joe Morgan led off the seventh inning with a home run to put the Giants up 1-0. San Francisco’s Doyle Alexander only gave up one hit in the first eight scoreless innings. But in the bottom of the ninth, Houston loaded the bases with one out. Jose Cruz brought home the tying run with a sacrifice fly, but the Astros couldn’t get a second, and the game went to extra innings. Ryan went 11 innings and finished with a line of 12 strikeouts, three hits, one walk and one run. Houston had runners on third base in both the 10th and 11th innings but couldn’t bring home the game-winner. Darrell Evans led off the Giants’ 13th with a walk, and one out later, Martin launched a home run to center field to finally break the deadlock. The Astros brought the tying run to the plate with two outs in the bottom of the 13th, but the Giants’ Fred Breining got the final out to earn the win.
