GAME #42 (losers’ bracket):
Johnny Bench hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning and Tom Seaver and Tom Hume combined on a two-hit shutout. The Reds had eight hits and advanced runners to at least second base in all eight innings that they came to bat. But the only runs came in the fourth as George Foster singled and Bench drove one over the left-field wall. Seaver was in excellent form, giving up only one hit in the first eight innings, and only one Tiger reached second base during that time. In the ninth, the Tigers threatened, getting their second hit, plus two walks, to load the bases with two out. Seaver left the game in favor of closer Hume, who got the final out. Kirk Gibson had both of the Tigers’ hits, while Ron Oester doubled twice for the Reds.
