GAME #44 (losers’ bracket):
The Reds scored three runs in the first two innings and took a 4-0 lead after five innings. Dave Collins walked to lead off the first and eventually scored on an RBI groundout by George Foster. An error prolonged the second inning, and Ken Griffey capitalized with a single that scored two unearned runs, making it 3-0. Dave Concepcion had an RBI single in the fifth. Baltimore’s only offense came in the sixth inning when Rich Dauer blasted a two-run homer. The Orioles had two runners on in both the eighth and ninth innings, but couldn’t get them home. With two outs and runners on first and third in the eighth, Mario Soto was pulled for reliever Joe Price, who got the next batter to fly out. Facing closer Tom Hume, Baltimore put runners on first and second with one out, but Hume coaxed a game-ending double play out of the next hitter.
