GAME #41 (losers’ bracket):
NO-HITTER! The Athletics’ Steve McCatty pitched to the minimum 27 hitters en route to the near-perfect game. He retired the first 21 batters, then issued a leadoff walk to Steve Garvey in the eighth inning. But an A’s double play ended the inning, and McCatty finished off the no-hitter with his sixth and seventh strikeouts in the final frame. The Dodgers’ Jerry Reuss was perfect through three, but in the bottom of the fourth, Rickey Henderson led off with a walk. After the first out, Cliff Johnson singled, and Tony Armas blasted a three-run home run over the center field wall. Other than a single by Rob Picciolo in the eighth, those would be the only base-runners that Reuss would allow. McCatty hasn’t allowed a run in 18 innings in his two starts.
