Oakland Athletics 5, Houston Astros 3

GAME #43 (losers’ bracket):

The A’s scored a run in each of the first four innings to go up 4-0, nearly gave up the entire lead, but held on behind a complete-game effort by Rick Langford and three hits apiece from Tony Armas and Dave McKay. Oakland got an RBI single from Cliff Johnson in the first, an RBI double by McKay in the second, a solo home from Armas in the third and an RBI single from McKay in the fourth. The Astros finally got on the board on an RBI single by Cesar Cedeno in the bottom of the fourth, and made it 4-3 in the fifth on an RBI triple by Tony Scott and an RBI single by Phil Garner. The Astros nearly tied the game in the seventh but Art Howe was thrown out at the plate trying to score from second base. Oakland tacked on an insurance run in the ninth on an RBI single by Armas. Langford pitched 1-2-3 innings in both the eighth and the ninth to close out the win.
