GAME #45 (winners’ bracket final):
The Giants overcame a shaky performance from Vida Blue, who gave up seven hits and six walks in 7 1/3 innings. Blue repeatedly pitched out of trouble, as the Red Sox left 11 runners on base. Boston opened the scoring on an RBI single by Carney Lansford in the top of the first. The Giants evened it up in the second on an RBI single by Milt May, then scored two more in the third inning after loading the bases with no one out. Darrell Evans hit a sacrifice fly and Jeffrey Leonard added an RBI single, one of his three hits on the day. The Red Sox got their second run in the fourth inning on a Rick Miller sacrifice fly, but left the bases loaded. San Francisco went back up by two at 4-2 in the fifth inning when Joe Morgan led off with a double, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Jack Clark’s sacrifice fly. The Red Sox put runners on second and third with two out in the sixth, but Blue got the third out. After a one-out double in the eighth inning, Blue was removed for reliever Al Holland, who got the final five outs.
