GAME #46 (losers’ bracket):
In an elimination game between the two #1 seeds, the Athletics’ Matt Keough fired a one-hit shutout. He walked two and struck out just one. The A’s scored first in the top of the third on a solo home run by Rob Picciolo. The Reds’ only hit came in the fourth inning, but a one-out single by Dave Concepcion was followed by a double play. Oakland had batters reach base in every inning, but didn’t capitalize often, leaving a total of 12 runners on base. But, the A’s added a second run in the sixth inning on a two-out single by Dave McKay. A sacrifice fly by Tony Armas in the seventh inning was unearned after a Cincinnati error prolonged the inning. Keough retired the final 14 batters he faced.
