GAME #47 (losers’ bracket):
In the first and only rematch of the tournament, the Athletics avenged their earlier loss to the Red Sox behind another dominant pitching performance by Steve McCatty and a three-hit, three-RBI game by Rob Picciolo. After pitching a no-hitter the last time out, McCatty was perfect for the first five innings in this one before Tony Perez singled to lead off the sixth inning. The A’s were already up 2-0 at that time. Picciolo doubled in the third inning and scored on a Rickey Henderson single, and in the sixth inning, Henderson led off with a single and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Cliff Johnson. McCatty had yet to give up a run in the tournament after 24 innings of work, but Boston finally got to him in the seventh when Jim Rice doubled and scored on Carney Lansford’s double. Boston’s bullpen couldn’t keep the game close, as the A’s scored twice more in both the eighth inning (Picciolo hit a solo homer, and Henderson tripled and scored on Dwayne Murphy’s single) and the ninth inning (Picciolo knocked a two-run double). McCatty, who finished with seven strikeouts, three hits and zero walks, pitched perfect eighth and ninth innings to end it.
