GAME #49 (championship #2):
Jerry Martin went 4-for-5 and smacked a two-run double in the top of the ninth, breaking a 3-3 tie and lifting the Giants to the championship, while ending the A’s six-game winning streak. For the second straight game, Dwayne Murphy gave the A’s a 1-0 lead with a solo home run, this time leading off the fourth inning. The Giants had multiple chances to break the game open. They had runners on first and second with two out in the second inning, the bases loaded with two out in the fourth inning and the bases loaded with no outs in the fifth inning, but failed to score in each frame. Finally, the Giants tied it in the sixth when Martin led off with a double and scored on Milt May’s single. A third bases-loaded situation arose in the seventh inning as Larry Herndon stepped to the plate, and this time he delivered with a two-run single to put the Giants ahead 3-1. The lead didn’t last long, however, as the A’s scored twice in the bottom of the eighth. Rickey Henderson drove in two runs with a two-out double. He looked to give Oakland the lead on Dwayne Murphy’s subsequent hit, but Henderson was thrown out at home for the final out of the inning. Tied 3-3 entering the ninth, Jack Clark and Darrell Evans led off with singles, and Jeffrey Leonard walked to load the bases for the fourth time. Martin’s two-run double followed, putting the Giants up by two. San Francisco’s Al Holland got the win in relief, as he finished off the A’s despite a two-out single by Mike Heath.
