Washington Senators defeat Boston Red Sox, 4 games to 3

FIRST ROUND: A see-saw series saw Washington take what appeared to be an insurmountable 3-0 lead, but Boston came back with three consecutive victories to force a winner-take-all game seven. Walter Johnson was up to the task, shutting out the Red Sox to help the Senators advance.

Series MVP: Heinie Manush, Washington
Manush had seven hits in the series, six of them for extra bases. He batted .280 (7-for-25) with two doubles, three triples and one home run, while scoring four runs and driving in three. He broke up Cy Young’s no-hitter in the eighth inning of game seven and scored what turned out to be the game-winning run.

Game 1: Washington 5, Boston 2
Washington’s Walter Johnson scattered four hits and five walks to best Cy Young in the opener. Tied 1-1 in the fourth, Harmon Killebrew and Mickey Vernon hit doubles to put the Senators ahead to stay. In the seventh, Jake Early hit a two-run homer, and Goose Goslin added an RBI double to make it 5-1. Johnson only gave up two hits in the first eight innings, but allowed two in the ninth, one of them an RBI double by Jackie Jensen, though he got the next two outs to end it.

An impressive pitchers’ duel saw just one run and seven hits total. Jim Shaw (nine innings, three hits, one walk, five strikeouts) needed the shutout to outpitch Joe Wood (nine innings, four hits, one walk, one run, eight strikeouts). The Senators got a leadoff double from Sam Rice in the top of the fourth inning and he scored on a sacrifice fly by Harmon Killebrew. Boston never put a runner on third base, but had runners at second base in four innings.

Game 3: Washington 4, Boston 3
Goose Goslin got the Senators off to a good start with a solo homer in the top of the first, while Jake Early had a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning to make it 2-0. After 14 consecutive scoreless innings, Boston finally got a run in the sixth on a home run by Sammy White. But Washington came right back with a two-run homer by Roy Sievers to extend the lead to 4-1. Boston got a two-run homer by Buck Freeman in the ninth and brought the go-ahead run to the plate, but couldn’t do anything else.

The Red Sox offense finally woke up, with more runs and hits in this one than the previous three games combined. Boston hit five home runs, two of them by Vern Stephens. Jimmy Collins drove in four runs, which included a two-run homer. Boston scored seven runs in the first four innings to knock Walter Johnson out of the contest. Harmon Killebrew and Heinie Manush homered for the Senators.

Game 5: Boston 8, Washington 6
Trailing 6-5 entering the ninth inning, Boston scored three runs to extend the series and send it back to Fenway Park, highlighted by a go-ahead two-RBI double by Jimmy Collins and a run-scoring single by Johnny Pesky. Washington had gone up 3-1 after the first inning, though Boston scored single runs in five different innings, including an RBI double by Collins in the seventh inning, to take a 5-4 lead. Washington retook the lead with two runs in the bottom of the eighth thanks to a two-out RBI triple by Heinie Manush and an RBI single by Mickey Vernon (who went 4-for-4).

Boston clung to a 1-0 lead after five innings thanks to a fourth-inning RBI double by Bobby Doerr, then exploded for eight runs between the sixth and eighth innings. Doerr had an RBI triple and Buck Freeman slugged a two-run homer in the sixth. Sammy White led off the seventh with a homer, then had a two-run double in the eighth. Dutch Leonard (eight innings, 10 strikeouts) kept Washington hitless for the first 5 1/3 innings. The Senators finally got on the board in the ninth on homers by Harmon Killebrew and Roy Sievers.

Boston’s Cy Young had a no-hitter going through seven innings, but the Senators got to him in the eighth for three runs. On the other side, Walter Johnson tossed a six-hit shutout, striking out eight and walking four. The Senators’ Heinie Manush led off the eighth with a single for their first hit. After he was sacrificed to second, he scored on a single by Buddy Myer. After another single by Jake Early and the second out of the inning, Joe Cronin hit a two-run double. The Red Sox put runners on base in seven of their nine at-bats, but left runners on third base in the fourth and sixth innings, and at second base in the first and eighth.
