St. Louis Cardinals defeat Boston Braves, 4 games to 2

FIRST ROUND: Boston scored 19 runs in the first two contests to jump out to a 2-0 lead, but St. Louis got its bats going and came back to win the next four. Three of the six games went to extra innings (St. Louis won two of the three). The road team won the first five games in the series.

In a losing effort, Aaron had a big series, batting .400 (10-for-25) with nine RBI. Eight of his 10 hits went for extra bases, with three doubles, three triples and two home runs.

Game 1: Boston 7, St. Louis 4 (10 innings)
Joe Adcock hit a three-run homer in the top of the 10th inning to give the Braves the extra-inning victory. The Braves’ Wally Berger had hit a three-run home run in the top of the eighth to put Boston ahead 4-3, but the Cardinals’ Joe Medwick tied it with a solo homer in the bottom half of the frame. Dizzy Dean retired the next five hitters, however, and St. Louis’ Don McMahon closed out the bottom of the 10th with a 1-2-3 inning.

Game 2: Boston 12, St. Louis 1
Hank Aaron went 4-for-5 with three triples and three RBI, and Johnny Sain went the distance with a four-hitter to give the Braves a 2-0 lead in the series. Boston broke open the game with six runs in the top of the fourth inning, all of which were unearned. Eddie Matthews hit a three-run homer in the eighth to cap the scoring. Sain struck out four and only made one bad pitch, giving up a solo homer to Rogers Hornsby in the sixth inning. He didn’t allow another runner to reach third base.

Game 3: St. Louis 5, Boston 4 (10 innings)
Stan Musial kept the Cardinals from going down 3-0 in the series, as he tied the game at three with a solo homer in the top of the ninth, then put the Cardinals ahead with a two-run shot in the 10th inning. The Braves’ Wally Berger led off the bottom of the 10th with a double and scored on a Bill Sweeney sacrifice fly, but the Cardinals’ Lindy McDaniel struck out the final batter to finish off the comeback win.

Game 4: St. Louis 10, Boston 7
The Cardinals evened the series at two wins apiece after a slugfest that included home runs by Rogers Hornsby, Stan Musial and Ken Boyer. The game was tied at four after four innings but St. Louis scored six times in the next four innings, while Boston only plated three more runs. In the top of the fifth, the Cardinals went up for good as Jimmie Wilson tripled and scored on Enos Slaughter’s sacrifice fly, and Hornsby hit a solo homer to make it 6-4. Red Schoendienst and Musial had RBI doubles in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively, while Slaughter had a bases-loaded single in the eighth that scored two.

Stan Musial hit an extra-inning game-winning home run for the second time in three games, as the Cardinals won their third straight and took a 3-2 lead in the series. The Cardinals were down a run heading to the ninth when Rogers Hornsby singled, went to second on a groundout, stole third base, and scored on a throwing error by the Boston catcher. Musial’s home run came with one out in the top of the 11th. Boston, which got homers from Eddie Matthews and Hank Aaron, put runners on first and second base in the eighth inning and on first and third in the 11th inning but came away with nothing.

Mort Cooper clinched the series with a three-hit shutout, while Johnny Mize hit two home runs and drove in six, including a grand slam in the bottom of the first inning. Mize also had an RBI single in the third inning and a solo homer in the sixth inning. The Cardinals’ other run came courtesy of a Joe Medwick solo shot in the fifth inning. Cooper allowed three walks and struck out seven. He didn’t allow a Boston runner to reach second base until the sixth inning, and none reached third base until the eighth inning.
