Cleveland Indians defeat Detroit Tigers, 4 games to 3

FIRST ROUND: Oddly, the road team won all seven games. Detroit was poised to end that streak in the final game as the Tigers took a 4-0 lead after seven innings, but Cleveland rallied to score five runs in the eighth and ninth to advance.

Feller won two of his three starts, beating the Tigers in game one and game seven. He had a 2.16 ERA in 25 innings. He gave up two earned runs in each of the victories.

Game 1: Cleveland 5, Detroit 2
The Indians scored single runs in five different innings, including each of the first three. Hal Trosky had an RBI triple in the first, Rocky Colavito hit a solo homer in the second and Nap Lajoie drove in a run with a double in the third, putting the Indians ahead 3-0. It was 4-2 after five and the Indians added an insurance run in the seventh on an RBI single by Lajoie. Detroit got a solo homer and three hits from Hank Greenberg, while Ty Cobb had three singles and three stolen bases.

Al Rosen had three hits, including a home run, and Addie Joss tossed a quality start to put the Indians up 2-0 in the series. Rocky Colavito doubled and scored on Boudreau’s single in the second, and Hal Trosky doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0 after the top of the fourth. Sam Crawford doubled home a run for the Tigers in the bottom of the fourth to make it 2-1. Rosen’s home run leading off the sixth made it 3-1, though Detroit came back with its second run in the bottom half of the frame. The Indians got another RBI single by Boudreau in the eighth.

Detroit went up 3-0, fell behind 4-3, and then scored two runs in the sixth thanks to a two-out, two-run double by Johnny Bassler to go back in front at 5-4. Ty Cobb had an RBI double and later scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-4 in the top of the ninth. Cleveland scored once in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI single by Tris Speaker, and had two runners on base with one out, but hit into a game-ending double play. Joe Jackson had four hits for the Indians.

Hal Newhouser pitched a two-hit shutout to even up the series at two games apiece. He walked three and struck out eight, and never allowed an Indian runner to reach third base. Detroit got an unearned run in the fourth on an RBI single by Sam Crawford, then had an RBI double by Harry Heilmann in the fifth inning. Hank Greenberg hit a solo homer in the top of the eighth. Cleveland’s two hits were doubles by Joe Jackson in the sixth inning and Tris Speaker in the ninth.

The Tigers scored four runs in the first two innings, then took a 5-0 lead en route to their third straight road win. Harry Heilmann blasted a two-run homer in the top of the first, while George Kell had an RBI double and Johnny Bassler had an RBI single in the second. Sam Crawford’s RBI single made it 5-0 in the top of the fifth. Cleveland closed the gap with a two-run homer by Larry Doby in the fifth and an RBI single by Steve O’Neill in the eighth, but that was as close as the Indians would get.

Cleveland ended a three-game slide by scoring two runs in the second and two in the third to jump out to a 4-0 lead. Al Rosen and Larry Doby hit solo homers in the second inning, while Hal Trosky had a two-run double in the third. Detroit closed the gap to 4-3 following RBI singles by Ty Cobb and Harry Heilmann in the fifth. The Indians put the game out of reach with a three-run eighth, as Rocky Colavito slugged a two-run homer and Joe Jackson had an RBI triple. Detroit needed three in the bottom of the ninth but only got one with a run-scoring triple by Cobb.

Cleveland trailed 4-0 after seven innings and Detroit’s Hal Newhouser had only given up two hits to that point. But the Indians scored twice in the eighth inning on a two-run double by Steve O’Neill, then got a three-run home run by Hal Trosky in the top of the ninth to take the lead. Detroit, which got a pair of RBI singles by George Kell to score its first two runs, got the tying run to second base in the bottom of the ninth before reliever Mel Harder closed it out. The game’s nine runs were scored on a total of 11 hits.
