QUARTERFINALS: A roller-coaster series finally went New York’s way, but it took a nail-biting finish in game seven that lasted 13 innings. The Yankees took what looked to be an insurmountable 3-1 lead and had the ideal pitching matchup in game five, but the Senators got a come-from-behind, walk-off homer in extra innings to extend the series. Washington then evened it up in game six behind Walter Johnson’s second win. Six of seven games were decided by one or two runs, including the finale.

New York had a chance to end the series after taking a 5-4 lead after the top of the 10th, but Washington’s Roy Sievers hit his second home run of the game, a three-run blast, to give the Senators a walk-off victory. Sievers’ first homer, a solo shot, had put the Senators ahead 3-1 after four innings. New York tied it in the seventh on a two-run Joe DiMaggio homer, and went ahead 4-3 in the top of the eighth when Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig had back-to-back doubles. The Senators’ Goose Goslin tied it in the bottom of the eighth with a home run. New York went back ahead 5-4 in the 10th on another RBI double by Gehrig. But after the first out in the top of the 10th, Goslin doubled, Harmon Killebrew walked and Sievers homered to right field to extend the series.

Red Rolfe led off the bottom of the 13th inning with a single, stole second, was sacrificed to third and scored on a wild pitch to give the Yankees the walk-off series-clinching victory. The pitchers’ duel saw both teams get six hits each. Jack Chesbro (10 innings, four hits) and Waite Hoyt (three innings, two hits) didn’t allow a single earned run, as Washington’s only run of the contest came in the top of the first after a New York error. The Yankees tied the game in the second when Babe Ruth doubled and scored on Yogi Berra’s sacrifice fly. No runs were scored for the next 10 innings. Washington didn’t get another runner to second base until the 13th inning. The Yankees left runners in scoring position five times before finally breaking through in the 13th.
