QUARTERFINALS: An incredibly tense series finally went the way of the Cardinals. Five of the games were decided by one run and the other two were by two runs. The final two games were decided in extra innings. Game seven saw the Cardinals rally by scoring three runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings to get it to extras, followed by a come-from-behind walk-off homer in the bottom of the 12th inning.

Game 1: St. Louis 4, Philadelphia 2
The Phillies led 2-1 after six innings, but the Cardinals rallied with two in the seventh and one in the eighth. In the fourth inning, both teams plated their first run via RBI doubles: Fresco Thompson for Philadelphia and Stan Musial for St. Louis. The Phillies went ahead 2-1 in the top of the fifth on a solo homer by Chuck Klein. St. Louis finally answered in the seventh, as Johnny Mize led off with a home run. Jim Bottomley singled and later scored on a Jimmie Wilson RBI double. Stan Musial added an insurance run in the eighth with a homer. Dizzy Dean struck out nine in his eight innings and Lindy McDaniel got the save.

Game 2: St. Louis 5, Philadelphia 4
The Cardinals scored five early runs and held on late for the win. Ken Boyer hit a two-run double and Red Schoendienst followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0 after two innings. Philadelphia countered with two runs in the top of the third on back-to-back RBI doubles by Chuck Klein and Cy Williams. St. Louis went back up by three at 5-2 in the third inning as Stan Musial drove home two runs with a triple. The Phillies got one back in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Williams. In the top of the ninth, the Phillies put runners on second and third with no outs. After the first out, Richie Ashburn’s fourth hit of the game made it 5-4. With the tying run at third base, the next Philadelphia batter hit into a game-ending double play.

Game 3: Philadelphia 6, St. Louis 5
The bulk of the action took place in the third and fourth innings, when Philadelphia scored all six of its runs and St. Louis plated three. Enos Slaughter got the scoring started in the top of the third for the Cardinals with a solo homer, but Chuck Klein had a two-run double in the bottom of the third. St. Louis went back in front 3-2 after a two-run shot by Ken Boyer. Philadelphia countered with four runs in the bottom of the third, with four straight run-scoring hits by Heinie Sand, Richie Ashburn, Ed Delahanty and Klein. St. Louis pulled to within one run after scoring twice in the sixth, including an RBI single by Jim Bottomley. And though the Cardinals put the potential tying run on base in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, they couldn’t get them past second base.

Game 4: St. Louis 3, Philadelphia 1
Joe Medwick homered twice and Dizzy Dean gave up just four hits in a complete-game effort to lead the Cardinals to a 3-1 series lead. Medwick hit a solo shot in the top of the first, then hammered a two-run blast in the fifth inning to make it 3-0 and account for all of the St. Louis scoring. The Phillies got an RBI single by Heinie Sand in the bottom of the seventh, but left runners on the corners. Dean retired the final seven batters after giving up the run. He struck out seven in the winning effort.

Ed Delahanty broke a 2-2 tie with a solo home run in the top of the eighth inning, extending the series for the Phillies. Earl Moore got the complete-game win despite giving up nine hits (Philadelphia only had five). The Phils jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run homer by Cy Williams. It stayed that way until the top of the fifth, when Jim Bottomley led off with a homer, and Jimmie Wilson later lined an RBI double to tie it at two. St. Louis got runners on first and second with no one out in the ninth but Moore coaxed a double play ball, then struck out the final hitter.

Cy Williams homered twice for the Phillies, one of them coming in the top of the 11th, as Philadelphia rallied to even the series. The Cardinals blew an early 3-0 lead. Jim Bottomley tripled and scored on a groundout in the second inning, and Jimmie Wilson and Enos Slaughter had back-to-back RBI doubles in the fourth. But from that point on, the Cardinals only got one more runner into scoring position the rest of the contest. The Phillies got an RBI double by Heinie Sand in the fifth inning, a solo shot by Williams in the sixth, and a game-tying solo home run from Don Hurst to lead off the ninth inning. Joe Medwick had three doubles for St. Louis.

Game 7: St. Louis 7, Philadelphia 6 (12 innings)
Pandemonium at Sportsman’s Park! The Cardinals fell behind 5-1, tied it in the bottom of the ninth, fell behind in the top of the 12th, then got a walk-off two-run homer from Joe Medwick. The Phillies took aim at their third straight win by scoring two runs before the fans were settled in their seats on a two-run double by Chuck Klein, then added three more in the second inning on a two-run double by Richie Ashburn and an RBI single by Cy Williams. But the Phillies would then go nine straight innings without scoring. The Cardinals trailed 5-2 heading to the seventh inning and scored one run apiece in the next three frames. Jim Bottomley led off the seventh with a home run and Johnny Mize had a two-out RBI single in the eighth. In the ninth, Ken Boyer led off with a single and eventually scored on a groundout. The Phillies’ Klein ended their drought with a solo homer in the top of the 12th. But with one out in the bottom of the 12th, Enos Slaughter singled, and Medwick sent a series-ending blast over the wall.
