QUARTERFINALS: Facing a 3-1 deficit, Cleveland rallied to win the next three games for the comeback series victory. Games 5 and 6 were one-run games, and then the Indians were able to end the series with a game 7 rout. The pitchers had the edge in this series, as Cleveland hit just .214 as a team and Chicago managed an anemic .186 at the plate.

Joss won two of his three starts – picking up the wins in game 1 and the decisive game 7 – and pitched complete games in all three contests. He recorded a 2.08 ERA in 26 innings and allowed just 14 hits , six runs and five walks. Joss gave up one run in game 1, three runs in game 4 and two runs in game 7. Even in the game 4 loss, he only gave up four hits.

The Indians hit three home runs to account for all of their runs and got a strong pitching performance from Addie Joss. Hal Trosky and Lou Bourdreau hit solo shots in the second and third innings, respectively, and Rocky Colavito followed with a two-run homer in the fourth inning. Joss repeatedly pitched out of trouble, and White Sox baserunners were thrown out at the plate in the fourth and fifth innings. Chicago finally broke through with a run on a Buck Weaver sacrifice fly in the seventh inning. The White Sox got runners to second base in the eighth and ninth before Joss closed it out.

Game 2: Chicago 3, Cleveland 1 (10 innings)
Down 1-0 heading to the ninth, Chicago managed to tie the game to send it to extra innings, then won it in the 10th. The Indians scored their run in the fifth inning when Steve O’Neill doubled and scored on Nap Lajoie’s single. But Cleveland would only get one more hit the rest of the way. With one out in the ninth, Luke Appling reached base on an error. A single by Minnie Minoso tied the score. With one out in the 10th, Buck Weaver singled and went to second on a wild pitch. Nellie Fox put the White Sox ahead with an RBI single. Fox went to second on another wild pitch, and after the second out, Eddie Collins’ RBI single gave Chicago its third run. Cleveland brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the 10th but Chicago closer Gerry Staley recorded the final out.

Game 3: Chicago 7, Cleveland 3
Cleveland took the lead twice early, but Chicago evened the game at 2-2 after one inning and 3-3 after three innings. In the fourth, Buck Weaver and Nellie Fox singled, and Sherm Lollar belted a three-run home to put the White Sox up 6-3. An RBI single by Weaver pushed the lead to 7-3 in the fifth inning. The Indians got only two hits from the fourth inning on as Thornton Lee got the complete-game win.

Ed Walsh (six hits, two walks, one run) outdueled Addie Joss (four hits, zero walks, three runs) to push the White Sox to a 3-1 series edge. Cleveland took a 1-0 lead on Larry Doby’s second-inning home run. All three Chicago runs came in the bottom of the fifth inning as the White Sox collected three of their four hits off of Joss. With one out, Minnie Minoso singled and stole second. He then came home on a Harry Hooper single. After the second out, Nellie Fox tripled, scoring Hooper, and then a wild pitch allowed Fox to score. The Indians got a runner to third base in the eighth inning and put runners on first and second in the ninth, but came up empty against Walsh.

Cleveland hit three home runs to take the lead but had to hold off a late Chicago comeback. After four scoreless innings, Al Rosen hit a solo home run to lead off the fifth, and Larry Doby hit a two-run shot in the seventh inning. Stan Coveleski only gave up one hit to the White Sox in the first seven innings, but Eddie Collins’ RBI double made it 3-1 in the top of the eighth. Rocky Colavito restored the three-run Cleveland lead at 4-1 with a homer in the top of the ninth. In the bottom of the ninth, the White Sox staged a two-out rally. Harry Hooper walked and Buck Weaver singled, and Nellie Fox plated them both with a double. With the tying run on second, Cleveland reliever Don Mossi replaced Coveleski, and got the final out.

Game 6: Cleveland 2, Chicago 1
Bob Feller (three hits, zero walks, one run, eight strikeouts) outpitched Thornton Lee (five hits, seven walks, two runs, four strikeouts) to send the series to a seventh game. Chicago took the lead in the top of the third when Buck Weaver tripled and scored on a balk. The Indians evened it in the fifth inning when Larry Doby walked and later scored on Steve O’Neill’s double. In the bottom of the seventh, Rocky Colavito led off with a single and later scored on a Joe Jackson single. The Indians tried to extend the lead, but left five runners on base in their final innings at bat. Over the final five innings, Feller only allowed one hit and no White Sox runners made it past first base. He struck out the side in the fifth inning and retired the game’s final seven batters.

The Indians didn’t need to sweat out another close game, notching six runs in the second inning to jump out to an insurmountable lead. Al Rosen got the scoring going with a two-run homer. After a couple of singles, Steve O’Neill provided a two-run double, Joe Jackson hit an RBI triple and Nap Lajoie sent home the sixth run with a sacrifice fly. Addie Joss (four hits, two walks) made just one bad pitch all game, a fourth-inning two-run homer by Minnie Minoso that made it 6-2. But that was Chicago’s final hit of the contest. Hal Trosky restored the six-run lead with a two-run homer in the seventh inning.
