Cleveland Indians defeat New York Yankees, 4 games to 3

SEMIFINALS: Cleveland won its third straight game 7 to advance to the World Series. The series alternated wins and losses: the Indians took games 1, 3, 5 and 7, while the Yankees were victorious in games 2, 4 and 6. Cleveland’s comeback and walk-off victory in the crucial game 5 was one of the most dramatic endings of the tournament.

Series MVP: Stan Coveleski, Cleveland
Coveleski won his game 1 and 7 starts with complete games, limiting the Yankees to just one run in each contest. He was also highly effective in a game 4 loss. In 26 innings, he gave up 20 hits, eight walks and just five runs, posting a 1.73 ERA. He struck out 10 Yankees.

Game 1: Cleveland 3, New York 1
Stan Coveleski kept the Yankee batters at bay and led the Indians to the series-opening win. He gave up six hits and three walks in the complete-game effort. New York’s only run came in the bottom of the first when Joe DiMaggio homered to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead. New York threatened in the third (putting runners on first and second with two out) and the eighth (getting runners on second and third with two outs), but Coveleski recorded the inning-ending out both times. Cleveland tied the game on an Al Rosen solo homer in the top of the fourth. In the fifth, Lou Boudreau led off with a single and was sacrificed to second. He scored on an RBI single by Nap Lajoie, and Tris Speaker followed with an RBI double to make it 3-1.

Game 2: New York 9, Cleveland 5
The Yankees’ offense awoke to the tune of five home runs, two of them by Mickey Mantle. Lefty Gomez pitched a three-hitter, but five walks and an error contributed to a five-run effort by the Indians. The Yankees took a 3-1 lead in the second inning after a three-run homer by Roger Maris, and made it 4-1 in the third on a Lou Gehrig sacrifice fly. The Indians scored four runs in the fifth and sixth innings, including a two-run homer by Rocky Colavito. But the Yankees outpaced them with two in the fifth on back-to-back homers by Joe DiMaggio and Mantle, one in the sixth on a solo shot by Yogi Berra, and two in the seventh on Mantle’s second homer.

Game 4: New York 3, Cleveland 2
The Yankees scored one run in each of the first three innings and that was enough to even the series at two games apiece. Babe Ruth had an RBI double in the first, while Yogi Berra slugged a solo home run in the second and drove home the third run with a two-out single in the third. The Indians got a Hal Trosky home run in the second inning, but didn’t score again until the seventh when Lou Boudreau provided an RBI single.

Game 5: Cleveland 5, New York 4
Three outs away from going down 3-2 in the series, the Indians sent the home fans into a frenzy by scoring three runs in the bottom of the ninth for the win. Trailing 4-2, Cleveland’s Al Rosen led off the ninth with a walk, and then Rocky Colavito tied it with a two-run homer. The Yanks brought in reliever Ed Lopat, but Larry Doby deposited his first pitch over the right-field wall for the walk-off home run. New York had taken a 3-1 lead in the top of the sixth on a two-run single by Babe Ruth. Cleveland made it a one-run game in the bottom of the eighth when Nap Lajoie (who went 4-for-4) tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly. The Yanks added what they thought was an insurance run in the top of the ninth on Phil Rizzuto’s RBI double.
