After the no-hitter, the Pirates bounced back with 10 hits and a strong pitching effort by Babe Adams. All of the Pirates’ runs came via homers: Paul Waner and Honus Wagner with solo shots in the second and fifth innings, respectively, and a two-run blast by Pie Traynor in the ninth inning. Adams limited the Cardinals to six hits and one walk in 8+ innings. The Cardinals’ only run came in the fifth inning when Jim Bottomley singled, moved around the bases and scored on a wild pitch. St. Louis twice had runners on second and third base with less than two outs, but came up empty both times.

Game 3: Pittsburgh 5, St. Louis 4
A four-run fourth inning by the Pirates helped them to a 2-1 series lead. St. Louis led 2-1 at the time, but Gus Suhr and Bill Mazeroski had RBI singles and Honus Wagner provided an RBI double. The Cardinals got two runs back in the top of the fifth on a two-run homer by Stan Musial, but that would be the end of the scoring for both teams. St. Louis advanced runners to third base in the seventh and to second base in the eighth, but couldn’t bring them home.

Game 5: Pittsburgh 3, St. Louis 2
Forbes Field went crazy as the Pirates pulled off a ninth-inning comeback, walking off with the series victory. The Cardinals led 2-0 after six innings and 2-1 heading to the bottom of the ninth. Arky Vaughan led off with a walk. The Cardinals’ Mort Cooper, who had only given up two hits to that point, was lifted for closer Lindy McDaniel. After the first out of the inning, Paul Waner tripled, scoring Vaughan and tying the game. After the second out, Gus Suhr blooped a single over the second baseman’s head, sending Waner home with the winning run. Two of the Pirates’ four hits came in the final inning. St. Louis had taken a 2-0 lead in the third inning when Enos Slaughter hit a solo homer, Joe Medwick doubled and Rogers Hornsby had an RBI single. The Cardinals managed four more hits, but didn’t get another runner past second base. The Pirates got a leadoff solo home run from Ralph Kiner in the seventh inning for their first run.
