Rip Sewell pitched a two-hit shutout to lead the Pirates to a 2-0 series lead. He gave up two walks and struck out three.
All four Cleveland baserunners got into scoring position with less than two outs. Al Rosen and Nap Lajoie singled in the second and ninth, respectively, and Joe Jackson drew walks in the first and third. Jackson, in the first inning, was the only one to reach third base, however, and Sewell shut down the threat each time. Sewell retired 18 straight batters at one point between the third and ninth innings.
Pittsburgh went up 2-0 in the second inning. Paul Waner singled with one out and moved to second base on the second out. Gus Suhr tripled to plate the first run, and Johnny Gooch followed with an RBI single. Three of Pittsburgh’s five hits off Addie Joss came in that inning. In the sixth inning, Ralph Kiner hit a solo home run, his 11th homer in 17 games.
Suhr, the only player in the contest to get multiple hits, had a pair of triples for the Pirates.
