WS G4: Cleveland 3, Pittsburgh 1

Locked in a pitchers’ duel and tied 1-1 after seven innings, the Indians finally broke through in the bottom of the eighth, as they collected three of their four hits for the entire contest and scored twice to even the series.

With the series now tied 2-2, this is the first time Pittsburgh will play a game 6 in this tournament. Pirate starter Babe Adams suffered his first loss in his eighth start as he was outdone by Bob Feller, who gave up four hits and one unearned run in 8+ innings.

The Indians jumped in front 1-0 in the third inning as Lou Boudreau walked with one out, then moved to second on a groundout. Joe Jackson came through with an RBI single on the Indians’ first hit of the game. They wouldn’t get another one until the eighth inning.

Feller retired the first 13 batters of the game. He pitched out of trouble in the fifth inning, but gave up an unearned run in the sixth as the Pirates tied it up. Bill Mazeroski reached base on an error, and scored from first base on Honus Wagner’s double.

Heading into the bottom of the eighth, Adams had a one-hitter going, but Boudreau led off with a double. He was sacrificed to third base, and Joe Jackson tripled to put the Indians ahead. After a walk, Tris Speaker drove in a run with a single, making it 3-1.

The Pirates threatened in the top of the ninth. Feller gave up a walk and a hit to put runners on first and second with no one out. Reliever Don Mossi came in and got the next three outs.
