After pitching a two-hit shutout in game 2, Rip Sewell came back with another gem for the Pirates, this time tossing a three-hit shutout in the crucial game 5 effort. The series heads back to Pittsburgh with the Pirates holding a 3-2 lead.
Sewell didn’t give up a hit until there were two out in the seventh inning. Al Rosen doubled and Rocky Colavito singled, but Rosen was thrown out at the plate trying to score.
Pittsburgh already led 3-0 at that point. Pie Traynor reached on an error in the first inning and scored on Arky Vaughan’s double. Then, in the second inning, Bill Mazeroski hit a two-run homer. The Pirates scored their final run on a Traynor solo home run in the eighth inning.
Pittsburgh only managed five hits, two of them by Mazeroski. Cleveland’s third and final hit came on a two-out double by Steve O’Neill in the eighth inning.
The next game will be the first Game 6 played by Pittsburgh in this tournament. Cleveland has been here before, twice overcoming 3-2 deficits to win in seven.
