WS G3: Cleveland 11, Pittsburgh 5

A return to Cleveland Stadium turned out to be just what the Indians needed, as they hit four home runs and knocked out 11 runs on 12 hits.

The Indians scored four runs on four hits in the first inning, with Tris Speaker getting an RBI single, Hal Trosky providing a sacrifice fly and Al Rosen smacking a two-run homer. A two-run homer by Larry Doby in the third and a Joe Jackson triple followed by a Speaker sacrifice fly in the fourth inning made it 7-1.

Bill Mazeroski hit his second home run of the game in the fifth inning to make it 7-3, but Lou Boudreau matched that in the bottom half of the frame, pushing the lead back up to 9-3.

Pittsburgh tacked on two more runs in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by Paul Waner and an RBI double by Lloyd Waner, making it 9-5. In the eighth inning, after the Indians got the first two outs, Pittsburgh got a walk, single and error to load the bases. Gus Suhr came to the plate as the potential tying run, but Cleveland reliever Mel Harder got him to pop up for the third out.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Indians’ Steve O’Neill struck a two-run home run to put the game out of reach.

Jackson had three hits for Cleveland.
