April 3: The season began with a bang, as the Giants sent 10 batters to the plate and scored five runs in the first inning, with a two-RBI single by Terry Kennedy and RBI singles by Candy Maldonado and Rick Reuschel. They added three more in the seventh, with Maldonado supplying a two-run double. Reuschel tossed a four-hit complete game.

April 4: The Giants again got off to a good start, scoring three times in the top of the first. Will Clark added a solo homer in the top of the third to make it 4-2. But, San Diego got three unearned runs in the fourth inning and the Giants only managed one hit over the final six innings.

April 5: Don Robinson kept the Padres off the board for the first six innings, and the Giants built a 2-0 lead. Kevin Mitchell hit a two-run homer in the eighth to make it 4-1, but San Diego scored twice in the bottom of the eighth. A two-out single by Brett Butler in the ninth helped plate two insurance runs, and Craig Lefferts pitched a 1-2-3 ninth.
