Live from the Bren Events Center in Irvine, in front of a capacity crowd of 5,608.
Gorilla Monsoon welcomed to the crowd to the promotion’s first show. Tonight, four qualifying matches will be held for entry into the tournament that will decide the first Pacific Coast Wrestling Alliance Heavyweight Champion, as well as one tag team matchup.
Heavyweight Championship Tournament qualifier: Bruiser Brody vs. Tully Blanchard
Brody was dominant early, pulling off offensive move after offensive move. Blanchard kicked out of the first pin attempt. Action spilled to the outside, and with the referee distracted, Blanchard hit Brody with a foreign object for his first successful attack. The brawl outside continued to the point of a near double-disqualification, but Brody regained advantage, hit Blanchard with the jumping knee drop, and earned the win. WINNER: BRODY BY PINFALL
Heavyweight Championship Tournament qualifier: Barry Windham vs. Adrian Adonis (with Jimmy Hart)
A back-and-forth match didn’t end up lasting long, as Windham hit Adonis with his lariat finisher, and that was it. WINNER: WINDHAM BY PINFALL
Road Warriors (with Paul Ellering) vs. Iron Sheik & Nikolai Volkoff
Animal had the edge early, but Sheik and Volkoff battled back and held the advantage for a long while. The Road Warriors finally hit their finisher, the Doomsday Device, but Volkoff kicked out. The action repeatedly went to the outside of the ring. Volkoff was lucky to avoid disqualification when he first used the announce table, but his frustration boiled over and when he hit Hawk with a steel chair, a DQ was called. WINNER: ROAD WARRIORS BY DISQUALIFICATION
Heavyweight Championship Tournament qualifier: Hillbilly Jim vs. Don Muraco (with Mr. Fuji)
An upset! Hillbilly Jim countered Muraco at every turn, and got multiple pinfall attempts. Mr. Fuji distracted the ref on one of them, but when Hillbilly Jim slapped on the bear hug for a second time, Mr. Fuji couldn’t do anything about it, Muraco didn’t have anything left, and he tapped out. WINNER: HILLBILLY JIM BY SUBMISSION
Heavyweight Championship Tournament qualifier: Hacksaw Jim Duggan vs. King Kong Bundy (with Bobby Heenan)
Ring announcer Gary Michael Capretta began to introduce the main event, but Bundy grabbed Capretta and made threatening motions toward the smaller man. Duggan jumped in to save Capretta, attacking Bundy to start the match. It didn’t matter much, as Bundy squashed Duggan. When action moved to the outside, Bundy put Duggan through the announce table, then dragged him back into the ring, and finished him off with the Atlantic City avalanche. Following the match, Bundy was joined by ally Big John Studd, and the two of them continued the beatdown of Duggan. WINNER: KING KONG BUNDY BY PINFALL
To close the show, Monsoon teased the four qualifying matches that will take place during Thursday’s show: George Steele vs. the Iron Sheik, Curt Hennig vs. Ivan Koloff, Blackjack Mulligan vs. Big John Studd, and Magnum TA vs. Greg Valentine.
