PCWA Week 1: Thursday Night Throwdown

Live from the Pico Rivera Sports Arena, in front of a capacity crowd of 6,250.

Gorilla Monsoon introduces the card for the promotion’s second show. The next four qualifying matches for the tournament to determine the initial PCWA Heavyweight Champion will be held, as well as one tag team bout.

Heavyweight Championship Tournament Qualifier: George “The Animal” Steele (with Captain Lou Albano) vs. the Iron Sheik
Steele kicked out of one pin attempt and broke out of the Camel Clutch on another occasion, but he was no match for the Sheik, who put on the Camel Clutch for a second time and forced the tap-out. WINNER: IRON SHEIK BY SUBMISSION

Heavyweight Championship Tournament Qualifier: Curt Hennig (with Bobby Heenan) vs. Ivan Koloff
The match went back and forth and in and out of the ring. Hennig had a couple of pin attempts, the second coming after a standing dropback, but Koloff kicked out. Koloff then had two pin attempts of his own, and the second one came after his finisher, the Russian Sickle, and that was enough to finish off Hennig. WINNER: KOLOFF BY PINFALL

The British Bulldogs (with Captain Lou Albano) vs. the Powers of Pain (with Mr. Fuji)
An evenly fought tag team match ended in disqualification. The Bulldogs had the upper hand late when action spilled out of the ring. Warlord hit the Dynamite Kid with a foreign object, but got caught, and was called for the DQ. WINNER: BRITISH BULLDOGS BY DISQUALIFICATION

Heavyweight Championship Tournament Qualifier: Blackjack Mulligan vs. Big John Studd (with Bobby Heenan)
A classic match ended in controversy as Mulligan was disqualified. Both wrestlers had multiple pinfall attempts on the other, but all resulted in kick outs. The action repeatedly out of the ring and onto the apron. A frustrated Mulligan hit Studd with the ring announcer’s chair, eliminating himself from the tournament. WINNER: STUDD BY DISQUALIFICATION

Heavyweight Championship Tournament Qualifier: Magnum TA vs. Greg “The Hammer” Valentine (with Jimmy Hart)
The third time was the charm as Magnum TA’s third pinfall attempt, which came after his belly-to-belly suplex finisher, finally polished off Valentine. Valentine had thrown Magnum TA out of the ring, but Magnum regained control, smashed Valentine into the announce table, and then rolled him back into the ring and finished him off. WINNER: MAGNUM TA BY PINFALL

To close the show, Gorilla Monsoon recapped the winners from the eight qualifying matches — Bruiser Brody, Barry Windham, Hillbilly Jim and King Kong Bundy on Monday, and the Iron Sheik, Ivan Koloff, Big John Studd and Magnum TA tonight — and shared that during the next show, four more wrestlers would be added to the tournament field, and the format of the next round would be revealed!
