4/28-30/1989 San Francisco at Pittsburgh

The Giants closed out the opening month of April by winning two of three at Pittsburgh to move five games ahead of pace. San Francisco’s pitchers took shutouts into the ninth inning in all three games, but managed only one shutout and lost one of them. Don Robinson had a game for the ages in the finale.

April 29: Ernest Riles drew a bases-loaded walk in the first inning and Kevin Mitchell had an RBI single in the eighth. But the Giants missed chance after chance and left 10 runners on base before a horrific ending. Mike LaCoss took a shutout to the ninth, but was left in too long after a leadoff double and two walks. Craig Lefferts couldn’t get the save, giving up two hits and allowing the Pirates to walk off with the come-from-behind win.

April 30: Don Robinson had the game of his life, pitching a one-hitter and hitting a pair of solo home runs for the game’s only runs. Robinson walked two and the Giants’ defense gave up four errors, but Pittsburgh only got a runner to second base in three different innings, and didn’t get a runner to third base until the ninth inning.
