2/6/2016 Gonzaga at Pepperdine

This was loss number 31 in a row by the Waves against the Bulldogs, a streak that has now run to 45 consecutive losses as of this replay. The three-point loss in reality has been one of just a handful games decided by a basket or two. But in this simulation, in one glorious alternate universe, the streak ended at 30 with an incredible defensive performance. Perhaps too incredible?

Real: [L] Gonzaga 69, Pepperdine 66 — 7-6
CB2K: [L] Gonzaga 79, Pepperdine 60 — 6-7
APC: [W] Pepperdine 66, Gonzaga 48 — 10-3
CCB: [L] Gonzaga 97, Pepperdine 73 — 7-6

In the Action! PC computer game, the Waves scored 66 points, just as they did in real life. But they held the Bulldogs to just 48 points — 30 less than their season average, and 21 less than they scored in reality. I’ve got no idea how the computer’s numbers came to be, but the Zags shot 30.9%. The Bulldogs’ offense wasn’t great in reality that night, as they shot 43.1% and made only four three-pointers, but they made up for it with a 21-for-23 effort from the foul line. As he did in the real game, Domantas Sabonis led the Bulldogs in scoring (20 in reality, 16 in APC), but he was the only Bulldog to score more than eight in the sim.

To add to the list of eye-opening numbers, Action! PC simulation is running the entire WCC schedule. The standings as of February 6 have Gonzaga and Pepperdine tied at the top at 10-3, and BYU and Saint Mary’s just a half-game back at 9-3.

The other two games were blowouts in Gonzaga’s favor, by 19 in the CB2K cards-and-dice game and 26 in the Courtside College Basketball computer game. Nothing terribly notable in the those two contests, though Stacy Davis went for 29 in the CB2K game and 26 in real life.
