To start the month of May, a short two-game home series with the Chicago Cubs put out the same results in real life, a loss followed by a win. The Giants remain five games ahead of pace after 26 contests.

May 1: The Giants scored first as Will Clark tripled and Kevin Mitchell singled in the bottom of the first, but that would be it. The Cubs scored three times in the third, two of them on a double by Mark Grace, to take the lead for good. San Francisco put two runners on in the sixth and eighth innings with the heart of the order up but couldn’t take advantage.

May 2: The Giants battered Greg Maddux around, scoring six runs off him in six innings. Jose Uribe had a two-run single in the second inning and it was 3-0 after three. The Cubs narrowed the gap to 3-2 in the fourth, but a two-run homer by Kevin Mitchell in the fifth restored the lead. Greg Litton hit a solo homer in the sixth and Terry Kennedy had an RBI single in the eighth to pad the lead.
