Just like the last series, the Giants split a two-game series, matching what happened in real life. Pittsburgh and San Francisco alternated wins thanks to excellent pitching performances by the Pirates’ John Smiley and the Giants’ Mike LaCoss.

May 3: Pittsburgh jumped out to a 4-0 lead before the Giants got their first hit. John Smiley set down the first 12 San Francisco hitters before Kevin Mitchell led off the fifth with a solo home run. He then retired the next 13 Giants before Greg Litton had a pinch-hit double in the ninth for the team’s only other hit.

May 4: Mike LaCoss took a shutout to the ninth inning for his second straight start against the Pirates, and this time he was able to finish it off. San Francisco’s only two runs came in the third inning on a two-out, two-run home run by Will Clark. LaCoss put runners on base in each of the first six innings, and faced a bases-loaded situation in the third inning, but pitched out of trouble each time. He retired the final 11 Pirate hitters.
