The simulation Giants matched their real-life counterparts by beginning a road trip with a two-game sweep of Chicago. Like clockwork, Kevin Mitchell hit another home run and Scott Garrelts had another quality start. After 33 games, the Giants are six wins ahead of pace.

May 9: Will Clark and Kevin Mitchell hit back-to-back solo homers in the top of the first, and it was 3-2 Giants after one inning. It stayed that way until the fifth, when Clark had an RBI double and Robby Thompson smacked a grand slam. San Francisco added another two runs to make it 10-2 in the sixth on a two-RBI single by Donell Nixon. Chicago got a few of the runs back late.

May 10: Kevin Mitchell had an RBI single and Ernest Riles had a sacrifice fly in the top of the first, and that was all the Giants would need. Scott Garrelts improved to 7-0 in seven starts, but it wasn’t easy. Chicago left runners on second in the third, third in the fourth, second and third in the sixth and seventh, and the bases loaded in the eighth. Ryne Sandberg had an RBI single in the sixth, but the Cubs went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position overall.
