Pepperdine managed to sweep all three simulations after posting a real-life victory for only the fourth time in this project, though it wasn’t easy. Like the real game at Pacific, which was decided by two points in overtime, the Waves won two of the sims by margins of one and three points, while the other was a defensive slugfest decided by 12 points.
Real: [W] Pepperdine 65, Pacific 63 (OT) — 9-6
CB2K: [W] Pepperdine 75, Pacific 72 — 7-8
APC: [W] Pepperdine 72, Pacific 71 — 11-4
CCB: [W] Pepperdine 59, Pacific 47 — 8-7
In the CB2K cards-and-dice game, the Waves trailed 61-51 with about eight minutes left. But Pepperdine then went on a 10-0 run to tie it. Pacific’s last lead was at 70-67, but the Waves scored the next eight points. Pacific had two chances to tie at the end, but turned it over once and missed a three-pointer at the buzzer. Remarkably, Pepperdine won this game despite shooting 5-for-26 from the field in the second half, and missing all 10 three-pointers. But Pacific would not stop fouling, and the Waves went 27-for-30 from the free throw line in the second half.
The Action! PC computer game was another close game. Pacific’s Alec Kobre, who hit 13 three-pointers and scored 41 points in the first meeting, was held to nine threes and 31 points in this one. This one went back and forth. Pepperdine led 51-45 with 9 1/2 minutes left, then Pacific went up 59-54 with 5:39 to go. Kobre’s ninth three gave Pacific a 69-68 lead with 1:42 left. After both teams failed to convert, Jett Raines put the Waves up 70-69 with 26.9 seconds left. After a Pacific miss, Jeremy Major sank two free throws with 2.5 seconds left. The Tigers might have had a chance to tie, but the Waves strategically fouled T.J. Wallace, who inexplicably made both free throws with 1.4 seconds left, and Pepperdine escaped.
Not a whole lot good can be said about the 59-47 game contributed by Courtside College Basketball, other than Pepperdine won. Only two players reached double-figures and the teams combined to make three of 21 three-pointers.
