May 19: The first three Mets to bat in the first inning reached base and scored, and that would be enough for New York. San Francisco’s only runs came on a two-run homer by Robby Thompson in the fifth inning. The Giants left what would have been the tying run on third base in the sixth and seventh innings.

May 20: A four-run sixth inning gave the Giants a 6-3 lead, but New York came back to tie it in the bottom of the sixth. The runs kept coming in the eighth and ninth innings. An RBI single by Will Clark and a two-run single by Kirt Manwaring put the Giants back in front by three in the top of the eighth. Both teams scored once in their next at-bats. A Darryl Strawberry two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth closed the gap to one run, but Goose Gossage came in and got the final two outs.

May 21: Despite getting only two hits off of Sid Fernandez, the Giants managed to leave 10 runners on base in the shutout after also collecting seven walks and a hit batter. San Francisco got runners to third base four different times but couldn’t bring anyone home. Jose Uribe had a single in the fourth inning and Candy Maldonado doubled in the eighth. New York got a solo homer from Howard Johnson to lead off the fourth inning for the game’s first run. Scott Garrelts (8-1) suffered his first loss of the season.
