5/26-28/1989 Philadelphia at San Francisco

Just like in real life, the Giants posted a three-game home sweep against the Phillies. Highlights included another Scott Garrelts shutout and another Kevin Mitchell home run, though this one was a dramatic walk-off shot in the finale. The Giants remain nine wins ahead of pace after 48 games.

May 28: The Phillies’ Ken Howell was on the verge of giving Rick Reuschel his first loss of the season. Although Reuschel gave up just one run and three hits in eight innings, Howell was dominant for the first eight innings, giving up just two hits and zero runs. He took the shutout to the bottom of the ninth, but Robby Thompson doubled with one out. After the second out, Kevin Mitchell launched a walk-off two-run homer into the stands, his 17th home run of the season.
