6/13-15/1989 Atlanta at San Francisco

The Giants and Braves reversed the results completely during this three-game series at Candlestick Park. Atlanta took the first two while San Francisco avoided the sweep in the replay finale, while it was the other way around in real life. The Giants dropped a game in the standings, and are now eight wins ahead of pace after 65 contests.

The Giants battled back with a two-run single by Tracy Jones in the fifth and an RBI single by Brett Butler in the sixth to make it 4-2. San Francisco put runners on base in each of the final three innings, including a bases-loaded situation in the eighth, but couldn’t make the comeback.

June 15: Scott Garrelts turned the Giants’ fortunes around with a two-hit, nine-strikeout shutout. It was his seventh shutout in 14 starts as he improved to 13-1. The Giants only managed two hits of their own. Their first run came in the third inning with the help of a couple of walks and a Robby Thompson sacrifice fly. Kevin Mitchell hit a solo home run in the fourth inning for the Giants’ first hit. Atlanta didn’t advance a runner past second base.
