The results of this three-game home series against Houston lined up somewhat accurately to real life: a one-run win, followed by two shutout victories. The simulation series was a lot closer than real life, however, as all three games were decided by one run. The finale was decided by a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth. After 71 games, the Giants remain nine wins ahead of pace.

June 19: Will Clark hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Jose Uribe drove in a run with a double in the second inning to stake the Giants to a 3-0 lead. Kirt Manwaring added a two-out RBI single in the sixth inning to make it 4-2. Newly acquired closer Steve Bedrosian (who the Giants got from the Phillies for Dennis Cook, Terry Mulholland and Charlie Hayes) had a rough debut in the ninth inning but managed to strand the tying run on second base for the save.

June 20: Scott Garrelts (14-1, 0.84 ERA) fired his eighth shutout of the season, and gave up just one hit, a single to Craig Biggio in the sixth inning. San Francisco’s only run came in the fifth when Robby Thompson walked with one out and scored on Will Clark’s double. Houston put runners on second base in both the seventh and eight innings but Garrelts pitched out of trouble.

June 21: The Giants and Astros played their second consecutive 1-0 game. This one stayed scoreless until the bottom of the ninth, when recent acquisition Pat Sheridan led off the inning with a walk-off home run. The Giants had stranded runners in scoring position in four previous innings. Rick Reuschel (11-1, 1.50 ERA) tossed his third shutout of the season. The Astros had runners in scoring position in five different innings, including on second and third with no one out in the seventh, but Reuschel pitched out of trouble each time.
