There was no June Swoon for these Giants, either in real life (18-10) or the replay (22-6). Three months of the season is now in the books, and the season is just shy of the halfway point. San Francisco is 59-20, 12 wins ahead of pace. The Giants enjoyed a 13-game winning streak at one point.
The team batting average was .242 at the start of the month and .242 at the end of the month, a far cry from the .259 they were actually hitting after three months. The simulation Giants had outscored their real-life counterparts by 17 runs heading into June, but are now six runs behind pace (not bad considering the much lesser batting average). It seems like the extra runs are probably coming via clutch hitting, as the Giants are batting .256 with runners in scoring position.
How did the Giants go 22-6 despite a drop in scoring? The pitching continues to be lights out. The team ERA dropped from 2.43 to 2.30 thanks to six more shutouts (that’s 15 on the season, when the real-life Giants only had one at this point). The triumverate of Scott Garrelts, Rick Reuschel and Don Robinson are a combined 37-8, and Garrelts (15-1, 0.81 ERA) and Reuschel (12-1, 1.48 ERA) are continuing their assault on the record books.
