6/29-7/2/1989 Chicago at San Francisco

Eighty-one games down, eighty-one to go. The season reached the halfway point after the Giants and Cubs split this four-game series. San Francisco’s bullpen couldn’t nail down the opener en route to an extra-innings loss, and then the next three games were all decided by shutouts. At the midway point, the Giants remain 12 wins ahead of pace.

June 29: The Giants had a 2-1 lead after seven innings thanks to an RBI single by Candy Maldonado in the first and a pinch-hit sacrifice fly by Pat Sheridan in the seventh. But the Giants’ wasted another excellent start by Scott Garrelts when the Cubs evened the score in the top of the eighth. Chicago’s Lloyd McClendon hit a two-run homer in the top of the 11th. Hammaker kept his going, but the Giants finally got a run across in the bottom half of the frame on Will Clark’s RBI single.
